The history and heritage of Albany, California is closely linked with its unique natural features, its temperate climate and its location next to the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The American Indians were the first known residents of the area currently known as Albany and resided at the bottom of Albany Hill next to Cerrito Creek. Grinding rocks and shell fragments discovered at the park next to the creek offer a reminder that Indians resided in the Albany region until the early 1800’s. This was time when the Spanish land barons began arriving in California
In 1820, the King of Spain granted much of the East Bay to a man named Don Luis Maria Peralta, in 1820 who then subdivided the property between his three sons. The northern part was given to Jose Domingo that included the region of Albany and Berkeley and used the property for cattle farming.
The entry of California into the U.S. and the discovery of gold resulted in the arrival of many pioneers to the west. This resulted in the end of the land grant economy. The Peralta property was subdivided into small parcels and then bought as homesteads, or farms. Mining for gold resulted in a demand for dynamite. As a result, Albany became the location of many powder plants located at Fleming Point, which is the current location of the Golden Gate Fields Racetrack. In 1905, this industry ceased after there was numerous fires and explosions. The great San Francisco fire and earthquake happened in 1906. This resulted in the migration of many of families to the East Bay from San Francisco. This resulted in a significant decrease of the development in Albany as well as other close by jurisdictions. The residents of Albany protested the dumping of garbage from Berkeley in their town by incorporating and became the City of Ocean View in 1908. The following year the registered voters renamed the community, mainly to express the difference between other communities with the same name. The registered voters of Albany adopted the first charter in Albany, which gave Albany full control over its own governance. the City of Albany celebrated its Centennial.
It wasn’t until 1947 when the Golden Gates racetrack started successful operations, although it was built in the early 1940’s. and was primarily used by the military during the war years. The Albany Landfill which was a demolition and construction debris landfill, was located next to the Golden Gate Fields. The landfill started operations between the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s. Eventually, this use developed into what is currently known as the Albany Plateau, bulb and neck. In 1979, the landfill closed which resulted in the land area being converted into a recreational area. The region was incorporated in the East Shore State Park in 2002. This property is currently owned by the state of California, with the exception of the Albany Bulb.
