About Petaluma

Petaluma, California is located some 37 miles north of San Francisco in the County of Sonoma. According to the census that was taken in 2010 the population of Petaluma was some 57,941 people.

Located in Petaluma is the Rancho Petaluma Adobe, which is a National Historic Landmark. By order of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, in 1836 the construction began. At that time the General was the Commandant of the San Francisco Presidio. It was the hub of some 66,000-acre ranch that stretched between Sonoma Creek and the Petaluma River. The adobe is believed to be one of the most well best-preserved structures of its era in Northern California.

The community of Petaluma, California, which was settled around 1850. The year 1859 brought the incorporation of Petaluma as a town. This made the town the oldest community between Eureka and San Francisco.

The first successful incubator for hatching eggs was invented by a man names Lyman Byce in 1879 and an incredibly profitable and new activity was introduced in Petaluma. Numerous chicken ranches were scattered around the terrain of Petaluma. Profits from the egg business gushed into town with the price of eggs being some 30 cents per dozen. There seemed to be a perpetual demand for the eggs from Petaluma as the result of the easy access to the enormous populace hubs of Oakland and San Francisco via the Petaluma River. There is no doubt that since 1917 Petaluma has been the undisputed world leader of the egg and chicken egg industry.

A promoter named Bert Kerrigan was hired by the Chamber of Commerce in Petaluma to take advantage of the chicken hysteria in the town. Mr. Kerrigan declared that Petaluma was the egg basket of the world. He then declared that Petaluma was the hub for the Chicken Universe. In 1918, Petaluma launched a National Egg Day, during which the town was celebrated with a parade that was guided by the Egg Queen and her court of attendant chicks. Activities ranged from a Chicken Rodeo to the Egg Queen Ball. In addition, Petaluma had the Chicken Pharmacy on Main Street, which was featured in both Ripley’s Believe it or not as well as in National Geographic. The price of eggs had increased to 50.5 cents per dozen by 1920 and the money was continually pouring into Petaluma. For almost 20 years, there was more money on deposit, per capita, in the banks of Petaluma than in any other community on the Planet. An impressive building boom resulted from immense wealth in Petaluma, the most of which can be seen to this day.

Located in the small community of Olema, some 18 miles southwest of Petaluma is the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, but suffered little damage, although some communities that were located further away the earthquake were destroyed. to escape with little damage. As a result, numerous buildings that were constructed before the earthquake still exist in Petaluma, and the downtown area has a striking combination of architecture from the present back as far as the 1870’s.

The southern part of the County of Sonoma was where the Coast Miwok Indian Tribe lived. Originally the name of the Miwok Village that was located just east of the Petaluma River was Péta Lúuma.

In 1848, a man named James Marsh discovered gold in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and as a result, white settles relocated to Petaluma from the eastern U.S. The position of the settlement in the center of productive farmland and on the Petaluma River, proved to be crucial to its to its growth in the 1800’s, and early 1900’s.

In 1926, the Petaluma Seed Bank and the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company was located in the Sonoma County Bank Building. However, it wasn’t long before Petaluma became known for its chicken processing and grain milling industries. Petaluma is also the location where a man named Randall Smith established Mesa Engineering, which manufactures high quality bass guitar and standard guitar amplification.

Still standing in central Petaluma area is one of the largest historic chicken processing plants. This brick building was built in the 1930’s, but isn’t used any longer for the chicken industry. However, it is currently being evaluated for change of use and preservation. Although it isn’t known any longer as the Egg Capital of the World, Petaluma continues to maintain a robust farming foundation with vegetable and berry farms, vineyards, olive groves, and dairy farms.

As the result of considerable stable bedrock that is underlying the area, Petaluma was somewhat undamaged during the diurnal temperature variation that occurred in 1906, earthquake, according to the Army Museum at the Presidio, located in San Francisco. Petaluma was the staging location for the majority of the relief and rescue efforts in Sonoma County, since it is one of the few communities in the area that wasn’t severely damaged following the 1906 earthquake.
