About Calistoga

Members of the Wappo Indian tribe were the first to discover the natural volcanic hot springs located close to the base of Mount St. Helena over five centuries ago. During the 1840’s, the first American pioneers started arriving as the news of a hot springs that had healing powers rapidly spread quickly to close by settlements.

In 1849, a man named Samuel Brannan was attracted to the stories of a hot springs that had healing powers first visited the upper Napa Valley. Mr. Brannan elected to construct a hot springs resort that would rival Saratoga Springs, located in New York after he had visited the area. Saratoga Springs catered to wealthy visitors from all around the world. In order to finance his dream that he would name Calistoga Hot Springs of the west, Mr. Brannan bought over 2,000 acres and sold off plots of property.

In 1862, after Mr. Brannan opened his Hotel in Hot Springs, and the rich residents of San Francisco traveled to Calistoga during the summertime to enjoy and relax in the natural volcanic hot springs. Mr. Brannan and some businessmen developed a railroad that made traveling to the upper Napa Valley in order to simplify the long, overland journey. Known as the Napa Valley Wine Train this service recreates this historic journey in a beautiful restored between 1915 and 1917 and offers Pullman dining and lounge cars on its daily round-trip service to Mount St. Helena from Napa.

A couple named Fanny Vandergriff-Osbourne and Robert louis Stevenson spent their honeymoon in Silverado in 1880, This was an abandoned mining camp on Mt. St. Helena. Mr. Stevenson describes his initial impression of the City of Calistoga as it was difficult for a European to imagine Calistoga, because the entire place is so new, and has such an accidental pattern.

A candy store and soda fountain owner named Giuseppe Musante, was digging a cold-water well at the Railway Exchange in Calistoga when he found a hot springs geyser in 1920. Mr. Musante established a bottling business and started selling Calistoga Sparkling Mineral Water in 1924. A man named Elwood Springer purchased a small bottling plant named Calistoga Mineral Water and rapidly became a popular national brand during the 1970’s. These days, the Calistoga Beverage Company, produces its famous Calistoga Brand Mineral Water from the same natural source.

At one time, the Napa Valley was the home of a considerable population of indigenous people in the Calistoga region known as the Wappo Indians. This was in the late 1700’s during the Spanish colonial era. The Napa Valley was controlled by the Mission San Francisco de Solano which is currently located in the city of Sonoma, California during the Spanish era. Mission properties were secularized and closed down by the government of Mexico in addition to the portioning of much of Napa Valley into ranchos after Mexican Independence between the 1830’s and the 1840’s.

During the 1840’s, the first American pioneers started arriving and claimed several properties in the Calistoga region. The expedition was led by Samuel Brannan who went to the new settlement on the landing in Brooklyn in Yerba Buena, which is currently known as San Francisco in 1846. Mr. Brannan also published the first English Language newspaper in San Francisco, named the California Star.

In 1885, Mr. Brannan bought some 2000 acres in order to establish a spa similar to that of Saratoga, New York. His resort, which was initially situated where Indian Springs Resort is currently located, opened to the rich cliental in California in 1862. With the finished railroad in 1868, Calistoga became not only a popular destination but the transportation center for the upper Napa Valley.

Visitors and their families still arrive in Calistoga from all over the world to relax in the natural volcanic mud baths and relax in the natural hot springs. There are also biking and hiking trails among the vineyards, in this pristine beauty of the Mayacamas Mountains.

The scenery in the area around Calistoga is the most grand and attractive of any in Napa Valley. Here the mountains on both sides is timbered with groves of pine and oak, and is green with chaparral, become more broken and bolder. Those on the north being crowned with crags and cliffs and faced with long, rocky terraces. Samuel Brannan’s hot springs resort helped draw considerable attention to sleepy little farming settlement. Author Robert Louis Stevenson also made a significant effort to make Calistoga more popular. He and his new bride named Fanny Vandegrift honeymooned in a cabin close to the abandoned Silverado Mine, and sometime later wrote the popular book Silverado Squatters. Slowly Calistoga grew, although soon after the resort appeared, so too did a business district next to Lincoln Avenue, which is currently named Foothill Boulevard. Homes were constructed next to Washington Street, and the railroad connected the upper valley to Vallejo and Napa.
