The Mexican land grant to tan Irish Immigrant named John Reed in 1834 is where the community of Corte Madera, California gets its name. Originally, it was the Corte Madera del Presidio. The land that surrounds Corte Madera offered both oak and redwood lumber for the swift development of early San Francisco, which includes a considerable amount of the construction at the Presidio.
Located only some 15 miles north of San Francisco, is the picturesque 3.2-square-mile community of Corte Madera. Cut wood is the Spanish translation of Corte Madera. The name is the result of the early logging industry in the region. The fact is that the use of the redwoods from the region helped to build San Francisco. However, it was quite a while before these early pioneers occupied the area, the land that comprises Corte Madera was inhabited by the Miwok Indians, who, in earlier documents were known as the Olamentke Indians.
This band of American Indians was believed to be a portion of the largest nation of Americans in California and occupied an expanse of land that was comprised by some 885 square miles in what is currently known as southern Sonoma County and Marin County. This large band of American Indians was comprised of a total of about some 3,000 people and around 40 Indian villages. They thrived until 1579, when the first white pioneers arrived.
In 1579, Sir Francis Drake, the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world in1579, named Sir Francis Drake made his first contact with the Miwok Indians. However, after that time, interaction with white pioneers until 1775, when the Spanish asserted their rights over the San Francisco Bay. From then on, the region area came to be dominated by a new kind of people.
California sluffed its rule over missions once Mexico claimed independence from Spain. The resulting property was passed on to independent owners and by means of land grants. The original Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio more than made up the Corte Madera, which was given to John Reed in a land grant in 1836. John Reed was once a native of Dublin who tried to claim land in Sonoma County but the resisting Miwok Indians forced him into Marin County. Mr. Reed constructed a sawmill in Corte Madera, in order provide lumber for the Presidio. As other white pioneers in the region also became involved in redwood logging, the industry increased for San Francisco’s Presidio. However, once most of the redwood trees were harvested in the region, the local industry became dominated by agriculture and cattle ranching.
The John Van Reynegom family from Pennsylvania came to the area and settled at the bottom of Christmas Tree Hill. The settlement was permitted to grow between Juan Cooper’s settlement and John Reed’s settlement since the property technically public land. By 1859, the Van Reynegom settlement extended to Town Park to what is currently the city limits of Larkspur from the east of the old railroad right-of-way. Eventually the property was acquired by a man named Frank Pixley, who was the husband of the daughter of Mr. Reynegom. After he passed away, part of the land was given to the School District of Larkspur-Corte Madera. However, much more of the land was sold as home sites.
Many of the families began leaving San Francisco and heading towards Corte Madera after the 1906 fires and earthquake. The year 1916 brought the incorporation of Corte Madera and it became the first community between San Rafael and Sausalito that ha a railroad station and a post office. The community was also the home of a harbor, which meant that Corte Madera had an easy way to trade timber, beef, and produce for manufactured goods.
Corte Madera didn’t become very heavily populated until numerous shipyard workers arrived at the Marinship to begin working during World War II. Since then, there has been increased development and the community of Corte has also established a method to protect the marshlands that surround the community. Corte Madera is currently the home of the Corte Madera Ecological Reserve, which offers many different biking pathways as well as a 22-acre park. In addition to moderately priced and friendly neighborhoods, Corte Madera also features two shopping centers.
Corte Madera became a ranching and farming and in 1872, the Northern Pacific Coast Railroad Company was established and started laying track between Tamales and Sausalito. This allowed the transfer of Russian River timber to San Francisco. Some 600 Chinese workers completed this task in only three years, and stations such as Corte Madera started becoming available all along the line. The Old Freight Shed and Railroad Station were located on the east side of what is currently known as Montecito Drive, by known then as Railroad Avenue. Menke Park currently occupies the original location and the old railroad right-of-way that is currently serving as a bicycle path that begins the incline up Corte Madera Ridge.
In 1904, a fire devastated the original railroad station, although in 1905 it was rebuilt. In 1941, commuter trains ceased running although up until 1971, a once-a-day freight service continued stopping at the station. In 1898, the Adams’ Tavern and Hotel was constructed by a Swill immigrant named Jerry Adams in 1898. It was also housed the first home to the first post office in the region and Jerry Adams became the first postmaster. These days, part of the original tavern and hotel building is home to the Fox and Stone Hair Saloon, which is located at 25 First Street.
