About East Bay

By 1900, the East Bay, California San Francisco was becoming the land of trolleys, and the era of the mass suburban home had arrived. The cleanest incarnation of this democracy was a small cottage in in California that had neither basement or attic. Between the 1880’s and the 1920’s, there were numerous small cottages that were located in central East Bay. During this time period, the growth of this type of housing was explosive. The ideal cottage had a square layout, a low pitched roof that was usually hipped, wide eaves for shade, and a large porch. The change to the horizontal cottage on open lots, which couldn’t have been more conspicuous, to the vertical Victorian townhouses, was dramatic. Front and back yards, wider frontages, porches, and windows, all offered increased light and, improved access to the outdoors.

As compared to the normal Victorian home, the amount of floorspace decreased significantly. During this time period, these new homes in East Bay were much better planned. Floor plans were streamlined and were opened up in order to meet the demand of modern domestic life. This meant the mother was the manager of home, there were fewer children, and no servants. In order to save heat, the corridors were eradicated, and the ceilings were lowered. Closets and cabinets and were built-in. In addition, houses were quickly filling up with industrial technology, which included kitchen appliances, gas heating, indoor plumbing, and electricity.

Prior to the 1860’s, these cottages in East Bay were only available from India. Then they became available in England where they we used as holiday cottages. It didn’t take long before these cottages became the majority of the homes in California. From California, throughout the 1920’s these cottages became popular throughout North America. Sometime later, they were introduced to Britain.

Suburbs made up of the cottages were a type of housing in East Bay were a combination of between moderately paid associates of the new members of the middle class and the highly skilled white and blue collar workers. This simplistic design represented a way of life, which was directly opposed to that way of life in the Victorian era. These cottages in East Bay were also used by the promoters of working class real estate sales. Initially, it was believed that these cottages were related to the arts and crafts movement. However, these cottages rapidly came to represent numerous different styles of small houses, of which were of almost any style, in which handicraft was minimal. However, this is represented by the small row houses located in eastern San Francisco, with stylistic and solid street front fronts that represent the Victorian era.

The ever increasing growth in Sacramento, the capital of California, along with the long superiority of on the Pacific Slope by San Francisco, were what makes this corpus conversion in the East Bay area housing possible. A large part of the proceeds were reinvested in commerce and manufacturing that employed incoming workers. However, luxury expenditures also took a large part of this wealth. A portion of the wealth was provided for the construction of utility networks. Also another portion of the wealth was reallocated to college educated professionals who made rather high wages, as well as to workers.

Another portion of the wealth that was used for property development by entrepreneurs such as Francis Marion Smith, in East Bay, who was anxious to make a fortune by speculating on property. In addition, more of this wealth was distributed through savings and banks companies in East Bay, who were anxious provide credit into the hands of those who would buy, build, and subdivide. California represents a conundrum for people that support the conservative view of consumerism such as Henry Ford, who helped the country consume the massive collection of automobiles, much the same as the cottage industry, much the same as the mass production industries that included the assembly line.

Large builders had produced a plethora of suburban homes, which was the immediate product of builders who could make a profit on simple homes, such as cottages that could be purchased in 1910 for as little $400. The large builders discovered that they could rapidly fill up subdivided tracts of property to consolidate the production in a manner that was much better by introducing the prefabrication of housing. These builders quickly filled up subdivided lots with speculative houses, managing numerous subcontractors complete with of for all the modern amenities. However, most builders of small homes remained their modest operations until the 1950’s. A new type community builders in East Bay, who unified sales, construction, and property development into one company, which was brought on by the end of World War II. As the result, they we able to fill tracts of property with numerous homes at one time.
