Redwood City is rich in local lore as well as history. Redwood City has a varied and long history being the oldest city on the San Francisco Peninsula. During the days of the California gold rush, Redwood City was originally a port community and in 1856 became the County Seat of the recently established County of San Mateo. The downtown area became a critical hub for manufacturing, government and commerce in the early 1900’s. Prior to a decline between the 1960’s and the 1970’s, between the late 1900’s and early 2000’s the downtown Redwood City area started rejuvenating and this rejuvenation is still continuing.
The early Redwood City residents sensed the success of their community as well as some amazing opportunities for the growth during the early 1920’s. The population was attracting numerous businesses and doubling in size, which became a major objective of the leaders of the community. The Real Estate Board as well as the Chamber of Commerce each sponsored competitions to find a catchphrase that would publicize and represent the finest qualities of Redwood City. However, the winner was produced by the Real Estate Board awarded a man named Wilbur Doxsee a prize of some $10 in 1925, for his entry, which read by government test, our climate is best. Sometime later, this was later reduced in size and then read climate best by government test and was delivered with pride for all to see on the signs all around the community.
Beginning prior to WW I, the German and United States started gathering meteorological data and conducting climate surveys. Their findings indicated that Redwood City was in the middle of one of the three best climates in the world. The other two were the Mediterranean Coast of North Africa and the Canary Islands. The local newspapers printed these results, which were read by a happy public who were overjoyed to learn that their climate was determined by government test to be the best.
Since its establishment in 1856, the residents and the land of Redwood City have long been involved in the progress of the County of San Mateo. During 1856, an Assemblyman named Horace Hawes, who was the owner of the land where Sequoia High School is currently located, delivered a bill to the Legislature for the State for the purpose of consolidating the boundaries of the Redwood City and San Francisco County. This bill became known as the Consolidation Act, and this legislation separated all of the rural areas of the County of San Francisco into a new entity, which came to be known as the County of San Mateo. One of the terms of this legislation required the residents to choose a county seat and to hold an election of officers. However, after it have been proven that a group of leaders of organized crime made an effort to have themselves elected through the use of fraudulent votes, the first election was declared invalid. They also wanted the county seat to be Belmont. However, under the leadership of an honest resident of Redwood City whose names was Benjamin Fox who had been elected to the position of county judge. In 1857, a second election was held and this time Redwood City was declared the legal county seat of government. Mr. Fox was a powerful voice for law and order in the new county and maintained his position as a judge for some four years.
