Tracy, California is located approximately 24.5 miles from Modesto, California and 16.8 miles from Stockton, California in San Joaquin County. The population of Tracy increased by approximately 70% throughout the 1990ís. It has been estimated that the population of Tracy increased by approximately 40% during the first five of the last ten years. However, the population of Tracy has only increased by approximately 1% since 2005. In 1869, when the Southern Pacific or Central Pacific Railroad arrived in the region a new community was established known as Lathrop Junction that was located approximately nine miles from Stockton. There was a shop, a roundhouse, some hotels and other related businesses in this primarily railroad business community. However, son this new community became the center for the railroad in the San Joaquin Valley. A coaling station known as Ellis was started, at the base of Altamont pass, approximately fourteen miles west of Lathrop. There were several businesses for the railroad and the railroad workers families by 1870, and it grew rapidly. In 1878, a new railroad line was started that connected to the Central Pacific Railroad close to Ellis, that ran through Martinez on its way from Oakland.
The hope was to avoid the expense of the helper engines in order to get the railroad trains through the slopes of the hills. In 1878, this new railroad line resulted in the establishment of the community of Tracy. A railroad official named Lathrop Tracy was the namesake of the new community. Soon thereafter all buildings, businesses, and residents were relocated to the new community of Tracy as well as the community of Lathrop and Ellis was closed. Even two hotel were relocated from Ellis. During these years the community of Tracy maintained its prominence as a railroad center for the region. The headquarters for the railroad were relocated to the community of Tracy from Lathrop in 1894. This relocation involved all engines, buildings, and equipment. During the 1950ís the importance of the railroad diminished and the local economy began to be sustained by agriculture.
