The first white pioneers were attracted to Paradise as a result of the gold rush. Prior to the gold rush, for years the Ridge was home to the Maidu Indian tribe. In the early Gold Rush days, the settlement on the Ridge was used as a corridor from Oroville to places that included Inskip, Toadtown, Nimshew, Dogtown, Coutolenc, and Quincy. Other routes that were traveled were Clark Road, which was an early stage route that connected Susanville to Oroville close to Magalia, and Neal Road, which was a cattle road.
In 1861 the Delaplaine school was established as families grew. The first church was established in the region in 1879. The first post office operated out of the Strong house. There were 301 Paradise Ridge residents according to the 1880 census.
The mainstay of economic development \were livestock and lumbering production, although mining continued on. Agriculture also was very important to the early economy and agriculture fairs were held every year. The formation of the Paradise Irrigation District in 1916 helped the farming industry, and the construction of a dam to form the Magalia Reservoir was completed by1916. Paradise came to be known as the apple center of California after apple orchards were planted.
The first fair in Paradise was held in 1937. It lasted five days and was known as the Paradise Fair and Apple Show. The Memorial Hall was constructed out of a pyramid of some 15,000 apples in the center of the dance floor.
Apples have been coming out of the Noble Orchards since 1921. It is the last of these kind of farms on the ridge and is still family run. Peaches are harvested from some 20 acres of peaches, and many different kinds of apples are produced from 30 acres of apples. As far back as the1870’s, the orchard has had seedlings.
In 1904, there was a railroad depot, located on the corner of Pearson and Black olive road, was constructed. It is one of the few remaining landmarks in Paradise. It was the next to last stop on run between Stirling and Chico. The area around it was known as Orloff named after the son of a freight agent.
The Maidu tribes were the first inhabitants of the Paradise Ridge. They made their Ridge their fall and summer home. The evidence suggests that a favorite Maidu camping ground was Berry Creek and the place close to where it crossed Pearson Road. In 1848 when the discovery of gold on the American River was made, pioneers turned miners went to the Paradise Ridge in hopes of striking it rich. When the discovery of gold was made by a man named John Bidwell who was going to Sutter's Fort and he left for what is currently known as Butte County looking for gold in the Feather River along the way. He hired some Indians and gathered some other pioneers and went prospecting. He found wealth at what came to be known as Bidwell's Bar. Between 1849 and 1850, pioneers from the East searched for gold in the streams of every canyon next to the Feather River. This included the Western Branch of the Feather River and Butte Creek.
In 1857, Dogtown became the home of a post office, which served the quickly growing trading post. Between the 1850’s, and the 1860’s, lumber mills began operating. Pioneer families started settling in the region. This was about the time that Paradise was named.
It was determined that the rapidly expanding community of Paradise needed to incorporate around 1966. By that time the population had increased to more 20,000 people from some 5,000 people on only 15 years. After several votes, in 1979 a majority of residents decided that Paradise should incorporate, but rather than a city, but rather as a town. And, the Town of Paradise was incorporated in 1979.
