About Clear Lake

Clear Lake, California is located in the Country of Lake and is a freshwater lake. It is located north of San Francisco and Napa. It is the largest freshwater lake that is entirely within California. It has 68 square miles. It is also some 480,00 years old which makes it the oldest lake on the continent. It is the latest lake to occupy a location with a history of lakes that go back a minimum of some 2,500,000 years.

Clear Lake supports populations of catfish, carp bluegill, crappie, and largemouth bass, and if known as the Bass Capital of the West. Largemouth bass have a record of almost 18 pounds and make up two-thirds of the fish caught in Clear Lake. Most recently, Clear Lake was ranked as the #1 best bass lake on the west coast and #3 best bass lake in the U.S. by Bassmaster Magazine. Within the Clear Lake basin there is an abundance of wildlife in addition to fish. There are year-round populations of bald eagles, osprey, egrets, blue herons, grebes, pelican, and ducks. The basin also supports large populations of other animals including raccoon, mountain lion, bear, and deer.

Clear Lake’s expansive, warm water makes it popular for watersports, that include jet skiing, boat racing, wakeboarding, sailing, water skiing, and swimming. There was a time when Clear Lake was even larger than it currently is. It included the Blue Lakes that are located to the northwest of Clear Lake. The landscape has changed dramatically as the result of landslides as the result have permanently separated the Blue Lakes from Clear Lake.

It is believed by archaeologists that the Clear Lake basin was home to American Indians for a minimum of some 11,000 years. At the close by Borax Lake, which is located on Rattlesnake Island on the southern end of the lake, evidence of this has been located. Abundant water birds, game, and fish, have made Clear Lake an ideal lake rather than harsh conditions of Northern mountains in California. During World War II and in the initial days of the cold war, Clear Lake became the seaplane base for the Alameda Naval Air Station. When landing conditions for flying boats were unsafe on San Francisco Bay, flying boats could land on Clear Lake.

Exhibits and programs about the region's culture and history are maintained and presented by rangers at Clear Lake State Park and at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park. Lake County is home to two county museums, which are the Museum of Lake County, and the Lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum. There are also numerous local and state local historical landmarks that are identified throughout the county.

In 1845, European pioneers began arriving. They often exploited and abused the native Pomo people. During 1850’s the Bloody Island Massacre occurred, which was one of the most notorious incidents. Numerous members of the of Pomo people were abused and enslaved by two pioneers named Mr. Charles Stone and Mr. Andrew Kelsey, whose names remain attached to the community of Kelseyville today. Finally, the Pomo people revolted and killed both Mr. Stone and Mr. Kelsey. Under the command of a Lieutenant named Nathaniel Lyon, a U.S. Army contingent cornered as many as 200 Pomo on an island in Clear Lake, and slaughtered most of them, including numerous women and children. Blood Island has a historical marker that is located on Highway 20 between the Robinson Rancheria and the Upper Lake.

Sometime later, the Pomo people were forced to live in small rancherias, which were provided by the federal government. For the Majority of the 1900’s, the few remaining Pomo people had to live in poverty on these tiny reservations. These days, the quickest-growing businesses in and around Lake County are now the many casinos that are currently managed by four Pomo rancherias, with many more casinos in the planing stages.

Within more than 100 miles, Clear Lake is a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. Riding personal watercraft, boating, water skiing, sailing, boating water skiing, sailing, swimming, and fishing skiing, boating, and riding personal water craft are all popular activities, mainly in the summertime.
