Benicia’s past is complete with intriguing places of national, state and local significance as well as settlers, and events, people that frequently sound more like a non-reputable legend than historical fact.
In 1847, in honor of Mexican General Mariano Vallejo, who is the namesake of the area, sold his huge area of land that was granted to two men named Thomas Larkin and Robert Semple, Benicia, California became the jewel of Solano County. General Vallejo wanted the settlement to be named in honor if his wife, named Francisca Benicia. It has been reported that news of the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill was told to the settlers at a Benicia Tavern. This resulted in the California Gold Rush. It wasn’t long before Benicia became a stopping point along the way to the Sierras.
In 1851, historic Benicia became the third settlement to incorporate in California after being established in 1849. In 1853, the settlement became the third State Capitol. Once it became known that the Legislature wasn’t happy with muddy San Jose, the residents of Benicia rushed to build the capital building out of red brick. The construction of the capital building in only 4 months largely because the bricks were made on site. Before Governor John Bigler relocated the capital to his hometown of Sacramento, Benicia was the State Capitol for 13 months. Currently the capital building is open for tours as a historic landmark and State Park.
In 1849, Benicia supplied weapons to U.S. troops in wars and battles as it was a military Arsenal. It should be noted that camels were housed in in Camel Barns, which currently is a museum, as the Arsenal following ls at the Camel Barns (now a museum) after a failed attempt to integrate the camels as pack animals in the army. It is also interesting to note that during his earlier military service Ulysses S. Grant was assigned here. In 1960 the Benicia Arsenal was decommissioned and the region is currently the home of many craftsmen and artisans as well as being a thriving industrial park.
A carpenter who was employed at Sutter’s mill named Charles Bennet and his associate were on their way to Monterey when stopped at a hotel. They went into the hotel in the middle of a discussion about how lucky the man who discovered coal in California would be. To which Mr. Bennett replied that he had something here that is much better than coal and will make this the greatest country in the world. Then, he placed on the counter about four ounces of nuggets of gold.
Lieutenant William Tecumseh Sherman was the Adjutant Colonel Richard Barned at the end of the War with Mexico. In 1853, when Sherman retired his replacement was Lt. Ulysses S. Grant It has been said that Grant spent some 30 days in the Arsenal Guardhouse for firing his cannons at the shoreline of Martinez while being drunk.
Benicia was involved in the Pony Express between 1860 and 1861. Riders would continue to Benicia and use the ferry and cross over to Martinez when they missed their connection with a steamer in Sacramento.
A part of the Benicia Historical Museum is the Camel Barns Complex, which its name from the contribution Benicia made to U.S. Military history. The U.S. Army tried to use camels, that were brought here from the Midwest from the 1850’s to the 1860’s, for use as pack animals. This experiment was abandoned and the camels were sent to Benicia for auction once the Civil War began.
The well-known Central Pacific Railroad was recognized as a primary railroad ferry from the Carquinez Strait to Port Costa from Benicia in 1879. Solano, which is the largest ferry in the world, was later joined by the even bigger Contra Costa, which transported entire trains across the Carquinez Strait to Port Costa from Benicia until the 1930’s.
The military reservation that came to be known as The Arsenal in 1850, was the first ordnance supply depot in California. The Arsenal suppled munitions and equipment and munitions for conflicts such as the Korean and the Civil Wars. These days it’s home to some of the Bay Regions most-noted craftpersons and artists.
Taking over as the commanding officer of the Benicia Arsenal was the father of seven-year-old Stephen Vincent Benet. He served in this capacity until 1911. Steven was sent off to boarding school when he was around ten years old. Sometime later, he became short story writer, novelist, and well-known poet. Some of his best-known works are John Brown’s Body which is his book-length historical poem about the American Civil War. Thomas Benet, his son, is a member of the Benicia Historical Museum, and the Benicia Historical Society. The community of Benicia has all the amenities of a large city with the atmosphere of a small town.
