The name of the community is and the creek derived from a man named John Stutter. Mr. Sutter owned the saw mill in Coloma, California where, in 1848, the first Mother Lode gold was discovered, Mr. Stutter elected to try his luck at gold mining since he couldn’t stop the pioneers turned miners from flowing over and destroying his lands. However, Mr. Stutter tried in vain to recoup what the Gold Rush had taken from him. In 1848, Mr. Stutter arrived where Sutter Creek is currently located with a band of Indiana and Kanakas, after finding a spot that he thought might contain gold, he started mining next to the creek.
Established on a small cloth tent, a small settlement starting growing, where the miners assembled on rainy Sundays when it was too rainy to go to Jackson or Drytown. Eventually, the settlement took the name of its most prominent citizen, and came to be known as Sutterville, Suter, Sutter’s, and finally, plain old Sutter Creek. However, Mr. Sutter wasn’t a miner, and several of the other miners in the region didn’t much approve of Mr. Sutter using servants to dig for gold. After sometime later Mr. Sutter left the region and returned with his men to Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento. Never again did he mine.
Being the supply center of all of the mines that surrounded the settlement, Sutter Creek achieved a lever of prominence. More than placer mining, it was hard rock mining that resulted in a booming town. Many on the mines in Sutter Creek were owned by a man named Alvinza Hayward, who became the first millionaire in the Gold Country. At one time the wealthiest woman in the county was named Hetty Green. Another woman named Leland Stanford was the founder of Stanford University and the governor of California. The name of the Union Mine was changed to the Lincoln Mine sometime later and then renamed again to the Old Eureka Mine. Sutter Creek continued to be a bona fide mining town, and boasted some of the worthiest deep rock mines in the Mother Lode. These days, the locals in the community and the visitors who come from all over the world, are attracted by both the small-town hospitality and the history of the community.
Notable historic landmarks in the community include the nearby Kennedy Mine and the Knight Foundry. Visitors and their families might want to take some time to enjoy the historic wine country that surrounds Sutter Creek. Wine production in the region dates back to some 150 years, when pioneers turned miners sought their fortunes in gold also found the ideal climate for wine grape growing. These days, Amador County has some 35 wineries and is famous for its red Zinfandels.
In 1846, Mr. Stutter was the proprietor of the sawmill in Coloma where the gold was first found. In 1848, Mr. Sutter was the first European to try his luck mining in the region. Until quart lodes were discovered in 1851, there was little activity in the former mining camp. Located just south of Sutter creek, at the foot of the sweeping curve of Highway-49 is the old Eureka Mine, that was once owned by a woman named Hetty Green.
Guided 45-minute walking tours through the remarkable Black Chasm Cavern are offered by Gold Country Adventures. Visitors and their families will descend some 165 steps into the cavern and see three chambers that are highly decorated. While on the tour, visitors and their families can view extremely unique helictite formations that apparently defy gravity by curling and twisting from the walls in the cavern in every direction, a bright blue lake, and sparkling crystals. In 1976, as the result of the proliferation of helictite formations located in the cavern an act of congress designated the Black Chasm Cavern a National Natural Landmark.
There are many different activities for visitors and their families to enjoy above ground as well. Sand bags that are salted with real crystals and gems can be bought at the visitor center and sifted through using a fully functionally mining flume. Geodes can also be bought as well and an experienced guide will help visitors and their families to open these stones to reveal the crystals concealed inside. In addition, the visitor center offers a varied selection of jewelry, toys, books, and mineral specimens for sale to take home as souvenirs.
Prospecting, gold mining tours, river swimming, tent sites, and cabins are available from May through September. In the way of family recreation, roaring Camp is something special. It is an old goldmining camp that is located on the Mokelumne River. it was accessibly only by horseback in the olden days. Visitors and their families can see our operational gold mine and can mine for their own gold by dry washing, sluicing, and panning. The three forks of the Mokelumne River come together in the Mokulumne Canyon. This river is incomparable in physical beauty. The water is so clear that visitors and their families can watch the fish and the tadpoles swim. There are natural rock formations and waterfalls that are forty feet high.
