Lower Lake is located in the southernmost Clear Lake area of Lake County. In addition, at one time its name was Grantville.
Lower Lake is located some 13 miles southeast of Kelseyville and 4.5 miles southwest of the City of Clearlake. Lower Lake has an elevation of 1371 some feet. At one time Lower Lake was the county seat. In 1867, the elections in Lake County were hotly contested with the County Seat being relocated between the settlement of Lower lake and what is currently known as the city of Lakeport. This rough and tumble contested feud was settled in 1870 and Lakeport maintain control of the County Seat. Lakeport has remained the County Seat for more than 100 years and is no longer an issue with the local resident while some believe the County Seat was taken from Lower Lake. At the 2000 census, the total area was some 7.9 square miles of which 0.1 square miles was water and some 7.9 square miles was land.
In 2010 the population of Lower Lake was some 1,294 people, which represents a -26.3% decrease in population since 2000. The population is made up of 52.7 % or 682 females and 47.35 or 612 males. 5.7years old is the median age as compared to 36.4, which is the median age of all California residents.
In 2000 the approximate median household income was $24,294 as compared to the approximate median household income in 2016 of $35,777. In 2000, the estimated income per capita was $13,5i6 as compared to the estimated income in 2016 o $22,980. In 2016, the estimated cost of a condo or a house was $119,031 as compared to the 2000 estimated cost of a condo or a house of $91,000. In 2016, the cost of mobile homes was $100,079, of detached houses was $185,325, and of all housing units was $143,158. In 2016 the median gross rent was $1,172.
The occupations in Lower Lake are 4% treating practitioners, 8% social science, physical, and life occupations, health diagnosing, and other technical occupations, 11% repair, maintenance, and installation occupations, 11% transportation occupations, 11% sales and related occupations, 21% production occupations, and 30 % management occupations.
In Lower Lake the average household size is 2.3 people as compared to the average household size in California of 2.9 people. In Lower Lake the percentage of family households 58.3% as compared to the percentage of households in California of 68.7%. One of the most distinctive landmarks is the Lower Lake Stone Jail. The jail is located in Lower lake a tenth of a mile south of highways 53 and 29 at 16118 Main Street. To become designated as a Historical Landmark in California the structure or location must meet specific criteria associated with California history.
In 1895 in Los Angeles this process started when a group of residents from the Landmarks Club wanted to preserve the Spanish Missions in California. In 1876 a man named Steven Nicolai who was a stone mason with a local business and gathered materials from a close by quarry, built the Lower Lake Stone Jail. His construction partners were John and Theodore and Copsey.
The first official historian in Lake County was a man named Henry Mauldin. According to his notes the Copsey brothers were so happy that they had finished their hard work on the jail, decided to celebrate their accomplishment by having some drinks at the local saloon. However, it wasn’t long before the brothers became so boisterous that they were sent to the jail's as the very first lodgers!
Then, the Copsey brothers realized that they had forgotten one key component of the jail's construction: They didn’t secure the roof to the structure. Therefore, escaped by raising the roof and got out. Although the population of lower Lake was a mere 1,000 people there was still need for a jail in Lower Lake.
This was when mercury or quicksilver, mining was booming all across Lake County. Lake County attracted a great workforce and was gaining in popularity, especially with the advent of the Sulphur Bank Mine.
The men would feel the need to blow off steam by visiting the local saloons, after a hard day at the mines. The rowdiest were thrown in the little clinker. It must have been quite a rustic to be locked up in the Lower lake Jail, since there was no outhouse in the jail.
