Pittsburg has been an ever-growing city in progress for the better part of a century. The most well-known written history of this Pittsburg town begins in the year 183. This area had begun flourishing with many agricultural enterprises. After discovering the coal's revelation in the slopes three miles south of town, the town was renamed Black Diamond in 1868.
This area of Pittsburg was ideal for soldiers to train in as the terrain was perfect and the weather was not an issue. It was also a rather large area of land to use as a training facility. The entire camp was then developed to provide training equipment and a place of residency for soldiers to prepare in and live in before they had served for the United States.
In 1942 Camp Stoneman was constructed and served as a military facility within the city of Pittsburg. This Camp Stoneman of Pittsburg was also used as a staging area for the wars that had gone on. This had included WWII and the battle of Korea. This base remained opened from 1942 right up till 1954. It had remained of service to be used as a stage for the troops of the war. The camp had also had a connecting railroad track that had passed through Pittsburg. The railroad was used as a receiving point for cargo and for pick up of the shipping men. The area is mainly consisted of buildings and loading docks that can still be viewed today. This Pittsburg camp had served through various stages of the war.
This Pittsburg camp area had been used during the second Infantry Division of the US Army. The mission had consisted of being a defense for the US Amry against the North Koreans attack. The Pittsburg base camp had allowed soldiers who were to take part in defending the US, to armor up and train for their battles to come. The base had provided food and shelter as well as training for the soldiers. This all took place from the year 1917. Pittsburg had witnessed a variety of soldiers coming to their base camp to train and ready themselves. There were soldiers from the US Marine Corps that had also been requested to teach at Camp Stoneman. During this time, there were also significant operations throughout the United States and Pittsburg, which included Aisne, St. Mihiel, and Belleau Wood.
The next important battle that had included Pittsburg base camp as a primary staging area was the 172nd infantry brigade. The soldiers involved during this time were then sent off to France. The primary colors of this infantry brigade were black and bronze and formed part of the V Corps. Pittsburg had once again served as a base area to train and to gather troops of all divisions to work together. As the years went by, the Pittsburg base camp remained active; however, this particular infantry brigade unit had been activated frequently and deactivated frequently. Eventually, following budget cuts, the force had reductions done and was officially deactivated in May of 2013.
Another brigade that Pittsburg had supported was that of the Engineer Amphibian Brigade. This unit was active between the years 1942 and 1946. The soldiers had been thoroughly trained at the Pittsburg base with strategical development and tactical capabilities to be ready for what was to come. The soldiers had been brought from all over; however, most of the soldiers were brought in from the United States Marine Corps. Aside from training from Pittsburg, the soldiers had also been sent to train at Amphibious Training Center. These centers had trained soldier’s not less than twelve army divisions and included one armored division. The soldiers had continued to use Pittsburg as a staging area and had continued to use the base as a home base.
