About Wilton

Wilton has a rich background in tribal history. The origin of the residents of Wilton is of Peruvian descent. The Penutian family was of Miwork descent, and their dialect was also of Miwork dialect. At this time, Sacramento County was also still in an indecisive state of ownership. This lead to many settlers to set up temporary housing along Sacramento. However, this had lead to the unfortunate violence and destruction caused by the Spanish and Mexican soldiers. It was a war of the ownership of land.

The war had caused the extinction of the original settlers. The cause of the action was that of the Mexican, Spanish, and American migrants who wanted more land to settle and be near the mining areas. Settlers and miners were traveling from all over in search of mining opportunities. This was around the time of the California gold rush. However, as most towns were filling up with people quickly, miners and other settlers were required to take any other land in the nearest proximately. Yet the greed for gold had unfortunately allowed miners and settlers to act inhumanely. Many miners had fought physically for the land already owned by other immigrants within Wilton. This had unfortunately, led to many deaths of the original inhabitants and the destruction of the already existing homes.

Those residents of Wilton who had survived had decided to move further along the river and once again set up places of residency. This had been when the tribes had formed. The tribe had represented community and safety for all residents. The tribe had also served as the representation of Wilton residents. The tribe had fought to have the treaty known as Forks of Rancheria signed. This treaty was used as the official agreement between the Wilton tribes and allowed the residents of Wilton to use the land as a place of occupancy for the remainder of their lives.

The tribe's ancestors had continued to build up their lives for the children to survive and carry on their legacy. As Wilton developed more into a town, the children had required some sort of education. The children were said to have been sent to boarding schools. These boarding schools were in charge of the primary education to be installed in the kids. Kids would learn and acquire additional knowledge as to the history of their Wilton ancestry and the languages used by their ancestors. During the year 1928, it was officially allowed for the people of Miwork to acquire and own this specific land of Sacramento county. However, this had also lead to the eventual deconstruction of the Indian tribes. By the year 1964, the tribe had lost its recognition.

By the 1970s, the Congress had decided to reconsider the termination of the Indian ruling of land. By 1991, the residents who were still under the membership of Wilton Rancheria were fighting for recognition once again. It took quite a few years to reach a decision. By 1999 the tribe of Wilton Rancheria had requested full federal credit and were a success in their attempt. By 2009, Wilton Rancheria was officially recognized as an official Indian tribe. This was a win for the tribes and residents of Wilton. To further the Rancheria's recognition, the members had successfully passed the constitution during the year 2011. The members had also earned four branches within the government, which does include the Tribal Council as well as a Tribal-court. The tribe looks after its residents and continues to fight for Wilton and its residents' development and upkeep.

Wilton has always maintained its historical background and continues to preserve its artifacts around the area.
