Families from the eastern states, and Europe, arrived in what is currently known as Rancho Calavaras, California, as well as the agriculturalists, who realized the opportunities for truck garden operations and stock-raising on the open grasslands. Ranching became the main job in order to have a strong economy, after the downfall of placer deposits. Pioneers turned farmers developed farms in the areas where they planted hay, wheat, alfalfa, and orchards. The majority of farming families practiced a varied agricultural economy, which included raising cattle, sheep, poultry, and hogs that supplied them with a continuous supply of foodstuffs that was augmented with vegetables, gardens, and orchards.
However, raising livestock was then and has always been the mainstay of the agricultural industry. This was mainly due to the practice of natural opening up the high country to cow and sheep camps. In 1849, the upland grazing of goats started. In the hot summertime, livestock herds moved annually to the mountains and during the winters, returned to the valleys below. Many of the geographic names in the high country were derived from the summer pasturing of the basic ranching families, such as Tyron Peak, Adams’ Camp Hiram Meadow, and Wheat’s Meadow, as well as many others.
Some families established vineyards that developed wines and brandies. However, there were many others that bottled the fresh clear, waters of local springs and sold them commercially. Olives that could be processed into oil, for both, family and commercial use, was provided by the planting of olive trees. Commercial winemaking began with some 1,000 vines set out on the Calaveras River in 1851. Mokelumne was another hub of wine production. During the early years, vineyards were also taken care of in nearly every community.
General Mariano Vallejo arrived in the area with some men who were looking for a mission Indian who had escaped, in 1829 and whose name was Chief Estanislao. He was the namesake for the Stanislaus. River. It is believed that when he was baptized, Estanislao received his Christian name, which was an honored one of the Polish saints’ names of Stanislas. The river became known as the Rio Estanislao, as was anglicized by a man named John Frémont in 1844.The Mokelumne River, which was located on the other end of the county, was the name of the Indian group who resided there.
Joseph Walker, John Fremont, and Jedediah Smith soon followed Vallejo and Moraga, as well as some French trappers, who worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company and had its headquarters in at French Camp close to Stockton. In 1841, an emigrant faction known as the Bidwell-Barttleson Party traveled through the region, followed by others of their persuasion. There isn’t much information with regard to the historic settlements from this early period. Historic activity started in earnest soon after the discovery of Gold made by Marshall in 1848 on the American River. This event forever changed the face of the cultural and the physical landscape in Calaveras County.
The name Calaveras county was derived from the Calaveras River which runs through the northernmost half of the county and was once named by the members of the Moraga expedition in 1806, who named the river de los Calaveras. This expedition has claimed to have discovered the skulls of Native Indians next to banks. The evidence indicates that the region was mined for gold by people of Hispanic origin, although the region was visited by numerous times by traders and trappers. It wasn’t until 1848, that the Americans discovered gold on the American River. Americans.
In 1850, when California gained statehood, Calaveras, which at that time included the current Amador County as a portion of Alpine County, was one of its original 27 counties. Amador County was first named Double Springs or Pleasant Valley, which simply became Double Springs, where the first county officers were elected in 1850. However, in 1851, both Mokelumne Hill and Jackson petitioned for an election to relocate the county seat, which eventually happened and was therefore established at Jackson. Mokelumne Hill became much larger than Jackson and in 1852, and was again relocated. Until the 1860’s, it remained there with the decay of gold production in the region. This was the result of its distance from the southern half of the county, because voters chose San Andreas as the new county seat. The new jail and courthouse were completed in 1867, and with the move of lawyers, county officers, and many other professional people were moved to San Andreas, the demographics were changed forever.
Some of the gold rush settlements came to be towns and villages as the century progressed. However, some of the others disappeared. Fraternal and community organizations thrived, while schools and churches were established. Well-planed stone, brick, and frame, as well as commercial buildings were replaced the tent cities of the miners. Saloons, liveries, shoe and boot shops, carpenter and tine shops, all lined the main streets.
