James Hardie ColorPlus lap siding in Pearl Gray gave this Napa home a clean, durable shell that holds up to the valley's heat and weather swings. We started by stripping the exterior down to the studs - tearing off and hauling away the old vinyl, insulation board, and cedar shingles - then re-sheathed the walls in new 7/16-inch exterior-grade OSB for shear strength and a sound base for the new siding system. With the walls open, our crew inspected the framing for dry rot and repaired the structural members we found before closing anything back up.
Over the fresh sheathing we installed HardieWrap weather barrier, Forti-Flash rubberized flashing at every window and door opening, and metal z-flashing to keep moisture out for the long haul. The Statement Collection lap siding went on in Pearl Gray, trimmed in Smooth Arctic White 5/4x4 Hardie trim around the windows, doors, and corners, with 5/4x6 trim framing the double garage doors. We also swapped out the old windows for 19 Alside Mezzo units plus a patio door, installed new-construction style for a tight, weatherproof fit, with obscure glass on the upper living-room sashes for privacy.
To finish, we painted the foundation, fascia, gutters, downspouts, and garage door to tie the new exterior together, then reinstalled the downspouts and house numbers that came off during the build.
