In 1776, A Spanish explorer named Captain Juan Bautista da Anza led an expedition from Sonora, Mexico along the coast of California with the intent of establishing a fort on San Francisco Bay. De Anza and 18 other men in addition to a Franciscan priest named Pedro Font, his cartography and diarist traveled to their destination in San Francisco, leaving most of the party of children women, and remaining men to rest from their travels.
At the crossroads of Steven Creek Road and Saratoga/Sunnyvale Road, currently known as De Anza Boulevard, the community of Cupertino was established. The community was first called West Side. However, a new name was required for the post office at the Crossroads in 1898 in order to distinguish the community from other similarly named communities. An historian and attorney from San Francisco named John Doyle had named his winery Cupertino to recognize the name given to the close by creek by Pedro Font. The name was bestowed on the post office and on Crossroads, in 1904 when the Home Union Store incorporated under the same name, The Cupertino Store, and then relocated to the northeastern corner of the Crossroads
During the late 1800ís, many of early settlers planted grapes in Cupertino. On the flat lands below and in the lower foothills of Montebello Ridge, there was a proliferation of wineries and vineyards. About 1895, a type of root louse struck the thriving wine industry, which in only five years, destroyed about 75% of the population of the vineyards in the area. Some of the more substantial settlers who had vineyards attempted grafting techniques, while many others switched to growing almonds, walnuts, plums, cherries, apricots, peaches, and French prunes.
The valley became known for its spring profusion of blossoms, as these orchards thrived. Many more people passed through the region of Cupertino to view these blossoms at first by the electric railway and then later by automobile. The Monta Vista region of Cupertino developed as the result of the electric railway. The name of the first housing tract in the area was Monta Vista.
The postwar population explosion on the Santa Clara Valley during the late 1940's swept Cupertino up in it as well. In 1954, the community leaders in Cupertino were concerned with piecemeal annexation to neighboring communities, higher taxes, and unplanned development started a drive for incorporation. Playing important roles in this movement were the Fact Finding Committee, the Cupertino Monta Vista Improvement Association and a man named Norman Nathanson, who was a local rancher in Cupertino. The year 1955 brought the incorporation of Cupertino as a city.
Cupertino remained primarily a community of estate vineyards and ranches, until the middle 1960ís. Then the De Anza College opened and soon thereafter computers became available.
Named after the great explorer from Spain whose cartographer named the creek after which the community received its name, the 112 acre college was the location of another winery built in the late 1800ís that was known as Beaulieu by its owners, Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Ella Baldwin. The California History Center was once their mansion.
The De Anza College has some 26,000 students but doesnít really have a downtown area along with Minolta Planetarium and the very popular Flint Center has become the center of the community.
Throughout all of their ups and downs, Apple Computer has been in Cupertino since the late 1970ís. The company currently has numerous buildings in an around De Anza Boulevard, which isnít far from where the co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs attended high school. The community has since become home to many high tech firms, such as Hewlett Packard, and Portal. Vallco Park, was initially a business park that was established by Varian Associates in the 1960ís is currently known primarily as a retail shopping center.
These days, the majority of the nightlife is concentrated over the border in the less residential San Jose. During the postwar years, this community started to spread its reaches across the valley. Since the incorporation of Cupertino in 1955, the population has grown tenfold, to over 52,000 people. The residents of Cupertino were concerned that the neighboring communities would attempt to incorporate the region, which would diminish home rule and submerge the distinctive qualities of the community is what motivated Cupertino to set its original boundaries. This was on way to maintain the character of the community, which has been an integral aspect of Cupertino since it was established.
These days, computer corporations and high tech electronics in the private sector dominate Cupertino. The community as a center for research and development and as corporate headquarters. Since the cost of living as well as the cost of property is so high, there is literally no manufacturing occurring in Cupertino. The Representatives of corporate businesses in Cupertino have reported that by having their facilities in this community, their companies enjoy a competitive advantage. The reason for this is because their sought after and highly skilled employees prefer living and working in the Cupertino region due to the balanced combination of residential areas, high quality schools, open space, retail center, high tech companies in addition to its moderate size.
