A man named Don Luis Peralta owned nearly 15,000 acres of property on the eastern side of the Bay of San Francisco in 1820. The Rancho San Antonio that Mr. Peralta owned was so large that it stretched over all the property that is currently known as Oakland, Berkeley, and Piedmont, California.
A man named Walter Blair was a newcomer to the area. Mr. Blair was born in Vermont but in 1952 he relocated to California. Purchased some 600 acres of property from the Peraltas for $1.25 per acre. On Highland Avenue he established a dairy. He also developed a rock quarry where Dracena Park is currently located and sold the stones to the city of Oakland for use paving the streets. He also built a 75-acre amusement in Moraga Canyon, which came to be known as Blair Park as well as building a hotel in Piedmont Park. It took 25 minutes for Oakland families to travel up the hill to Blair Park by horsecar. You could watch acrobats do acrobatic tricks from hot air balloons, listen to music, enjoy a picnic by one of the waterfalls, ride ponies, and sail small boats at the park.
The president of Western Union was a man named James Gamble, and he purchased some 350 acres of property from Walter Blair in 1877. He constructed a large home for himself on Hillside Avenue and planned to sell the remainder of the property so that other people could also build houses. Mr. Gamble named his business the Piedmont Land Company. In Italian, Piedmont translates into the foot of the mountain and he thought it was a good name for the new settlement.
Where the City of Piedmont is currently located, there were only seven houses in the 1880’s. Mr. Gamble’s gardens and house took up the entire block where the tennis courts, swimming pool, and recreation center are currently located, although his house wasn’t the largest. The largest house was owned by Sarah and Isaac Requa. It was painted yellow and since there were no trees on the hills, the sailors could see the house from San Francisco Bay. A man named Jesse Wetmore owned an additional house on the corner of Bonita and Vista Avenues, and that house still looks the same as did more than a century ago.
Piedmont had its first, and only, factory during this same time period. There was a two-story building that was the Ladies Silk Culture Society, and a mulberry orchard with more than some 6,000 trees, located at the top of Oakland Avenue.
In 1892, the Piedmont Hotel burned to the ground. The hotel roof was set on fire from sparks from the chimney and it took over two hours for the fire engine to arrive from up the hills from Oakland. A man named Frank Havens purchased the land and constructed a new clubhouse and restaurant. Mr. Havens, made beautiful bridges and pathways and also installed electric lights in the park. There was even an outdoor theater where musical events and plays could be held.
There were many writers and artists who lived in small homes that they themselves built on scenic Avenue, while Mr. Havens and Mr. Gamble were constructing large houses right in the center of Piedmont. During the early 1900’s, George Sterling, Xavier Martinez, and Jack London all lived in the hills of Piedmont.
In 1906, an earthquake struck San Francisco. Thousands of people fled across the bay to safety, many of which never returned to San Francisco. In a single year Piedmont grew tenfold.
Because there were more millionaires for every square mile than any community in the U.S., during the Roaring Twenties Piedmont was known as the City of Millionaires. In 1922, under the laws of the State of California, Piedmont became a charter city. IN 1923, the charter was adopted by the registered voters and can only be changed by another vote of the people.
Piedmont refurbished its currently existing parks and developed three new parks, during the 1980’s and the 1990’s. More than $350,000 was spent to construct a new overlook behind the Community Hall and clean up Piedmont Park. Crocker Park was received as a gift, with large statue of a bear and her cubs which was designed by a man named Benny Bufano. There were three new parks developed, which were the Coaches Playfield, Dracena Park, and Linda Park. The Hampton Field building is the newest park project, be used for recreational programs and as a pre-school for Piedmont children.
As Piedmont starts a new century, there are many names from the past that are still part of everyday life. Havens School is named for the man who refurbished Piedmont Park. Blair Avenue is named after the businessman and farmer who first settled here and Craig Avenue is named after the man who led the fight to for Piedmont to become a city. Requa Road and Highland Avenue remember one of the first seven families to settle in Piedmont.
