San Bruno is a city in California, San Mateo County. In 1775, Captain Bruno Heceta investigated the western San Francisco Bay shoreline. After his patron saint, he gave Mount San Bruno that name. The mountain-inspired the naming of the city. Jose Antonio Sanchez received the San Bruno land in the 1820s as compensation from the Mexican government for his years of military service. His land extended from Burlingame in the south to the bay in the east, and from San Bruno Mountain in the north to the mountain range in the west.
Sanchez's estate was to be divided among his nine heirs after his death in 1843. However, the property first needed to be inventoried by the Mexican government. Sanchez's successors lost the land through the legal system after Mexico was defeated by the US in the Mexican-American War in 1848. The founder of the Bank of California, Darius Mills, bought a large portion of the Sanchez property. San Bruno became a recognized municipality in 1914. San Bruno is presently recognized as an airport city. A million-dollar bond that was at the time unpopular with many people was passed in 1945 and used to upgrade and expand the airport. Since that time, San Bruno has expanded internationally along with the airport, making it one of the busiest in the world.
