In 1860, a general named John Bidwell established the community of Chico. General Bidwell was one of the first covered wagon trains to California, sparked by the news of the Gold Rush. General Bidwell discovered gold on the Feather River and with his newly found fortune purchased about 28,000 acres of land on both sides of Chico Creek that was known as the Rancho Del Arroyo Chico.
Located on the corner of main and First streets, General Bidwell opened the first store in Chico in what is currently known as the building that houses the Tres Hombres Restaurant. In what is currently known as the downtown area, general Bidwell was also responsible for the layout of the streets in Chico. Because of the many different varieties of roses that General Bidwell introduced, this downtown area was nicknamed Chico the City of Roses.
In 1868, John Bidwell married the daughter of a prominent family in Washington D. C. named Annie Ellicott Kennedy, while he was a congressman in Washington, D.C. Chico became their permanent home and they started construction of what is currently known as the Bidwell Mansion. In the upper Sacramento Valley, this mansion was the center of political and social life during the late 1800ís. Some of the special guests included Sir Joseph Hooker, John Muir, Asa Gray, Governor Leland Stanford, Francis Willard, Susan B. Anthony, General William T. Sherman, and President and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes.
The Bidwell family enjoyed and took great pride in the beautification of the community of Chico. The year 1872 brought the incorporation of Chico as a city. In order to develop a quality community, the Bidwellís were willing to donate land to anybody who wanted to build a public structure such as a church or a school. There was the possibility of a new state college for teachers being constructed in the region in 1887. Mr. Bidwell, with his spirit of generosity and in order to secure the location of this new state college for teachers in Chico, Mr. Bidwell donated part of his land to build the new college for teachers on. The school was called Chico Normal School and eventually became known as California State University, Chico.
Although, the Bidwellís made some lasting footprints in several regions around Chico, their legacy was left in Bidwell Park. Five years after the death of John Bidwell, in 1905, more than 1,900 acres of land was donated by Annie Bidwell, who signed the grant deed for a public park for the people of Chico. These days, Bidwell Park is comprised of some 3,670 acres of land, and is one of the largest municipal parks in the US.
Bidwell Park is frequently referred to as the Jewel of Chico, and is certainly the best legacy left to the community by General John and Annie Bidwell, who founded the community. John Bidwell wanted his wife, Annie to donate this land for public use to the community of Chico. In 1905, she did so and deeded some 1,900 acres of land and in 1911 donated another 301 acres of land. This parkland stretched west from the Childrenís Playground east to Upper Park. By 1935, the community of Chico bought many additional parcels of land acreage to the park, which brought the total acreage of land of the park to nearly 2,300 acres of land. Bidwell Park was the fourth largest municipal park in the nation at the time. The community of Chico purchased 1,417 acres of land on the southernmost side of the Big Chico Creek in 1995. This brought the total acreage of the park to its current 3,670 acres of land. Bidwell Park runs almost 11 eleven miles and straddles the Big Chico Creek up into the foothills of Upper Park from downtown Chico and the Bidwell Mansion.
One of the most enjoyable activities in Chico is known as Pioneer Days, which was originated by Chico State University. The event evolved into a weeklong festival from one Senior Day during its 90 year history, during the time when the college was still the Chico Normal School.
Senior Day offered the college students a speech by the president of the institution, a tour of the campus grounds, musical entertainment, and lunch. During WWI, the event was discontinued. However, in 1920, it returned and was hailed as a success since 275 college students participated.
The townspeople didnít like the event and were outraged by the random shootings and the disgraceful customs by 1927. The following year, the event was scheduled to be cancelled following the outcry from the public. However, the college students managed to resurrect the celebration anyway and gave the event the new name of Nepenthe Day, which meant the drink of the gods.
The population of Chico didnít like the new name or the subterfuge, and complained that the students were doing less pioneering and more drinking. Along with several of its traditions, Pioneer day was officially established in 1929.
The event was officially expanded and became known as Pioneer Week by 1947. It was about than that what is currently known as the Ghost Town Carnival started. Pioneer week included a Rodeo for the first time in 1952, which was called the Wild West Show.
