The community of Vallejo, California is the 142 year old home of the most famous and the first permanent naval shipbuilding and repair facility on the west coast and the home of the stated government of California. This community has a rich history that is intertwined deeply to both the nation it served through two world wars and the state in which it was born.
The Karkin and the Suisun Indians inhabited the location of what is currently known as Vallejo before the 1830ís. A man named Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who was a Mexican military officer, was sent to the northern California frontier to establish several land grants in 1835. The Rancho Suscol was one of these grants and included the region where the communities of Benicia and Vallejo are currently located. The leader of the Suisun Indians was a Chief named Solano, who allied himself with General Vallejo. This alliance permitted the area to mainly remain inhabited by Native Indians until the 1840's.
California became a state in 1850, and General Vallejo donated 156 acres of his land in order to create his dream of a flourishing new state capital. General Vallejo wanted the location to be named Eureka, however, his associates practically demanded the new community be named after him. Therefore, in 1852, Vallejo was the first seat of state government of California that was permanent. The glory of the community was short lived because the members of the legislature rapidly became disillusioned with the working and living conditions in the new community. Some weeks later the capital was relocated to Sacramento. However, the restless legislature relocated the capital back to Vallejo after being inconvenienced by floods. Later the capital was relocated to Benicia, and then again relocated back to Sacramento, where it has remained ever since.
For a while Vallejo was nearly deserted once the legislature had permanently left Vallejo. However, in 1853, the US Navy purchased Mare Island in order to create the first naval installation on the west coast of the US. The future of Vallejo suddenly became brighter.
A man named John Frisbie is considered the real founder of Vallejo, even though the community is named after General Vallejo. General Vallejo granted Mr. Frisbie power of attorney for the land grant, once his daughter married Frisbie. A man named E Rowe, who named the south/north streets after counties in California and the west/east streets after states, and also designed the layout of the community was hired by Mr. Frisbie.
Primarily as the result of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1854, Vallejo was flourishing. Mare Island grew into one of the largest ship construction and repair facilities in the world during WW II. During WWII, the production rate in the shipyard and the population of Vallejo increased from 26,000 people to nearly 100,000 people.
For almost 150 years, Mare Island had a considerable impact on Vallejo and the surrounding areas by employing much of the population in those communities as it constructed and repaired ships. Although in 1996, the shipyard was closed, the future of Mare Island is very bright. A combination of reuses will bring Mare Island back to the center of the economic activity in Vallejo in time. The multicultural diversity of Vallejo started much earlier in community than on many other communities in California. After the Philippine/American War and the Spanish/American War, numerous Filipinos settled in the region during the 1920's. Obviously, the presence of the Navy at Mare Island has drawn people from all over the world to settle in Vallejo, which makes the community one of the most culturally diverse in Northern California.
An important role in the future as well as the development of Vallejo was also played by the geography of the region. The waterfront of Vallejo, which located at the northernmost edge of San Pablo Bay, has made it an important harbor for ferry transportation, oil companies, industry, and commercial shipping in addition to the military.
Throughout the San Francisco Bay area, the most common form of transportation was once the ferries. They carried very large freight trains as well as passengers across the bay. The Solano and Contra Costa was the largest train ferries ever built in the world and between 1879 and 1930, operated across the Carquinez Straits. The Pony Express came to Benicia from Sacramento to Benicia to ride the ferry across the straits.
When the love affair that America had with the automobile started, passenger train and ferry service diminished. However, these alternate forms of transportation are still in use today. There are four very fast catamaran ferries in the community of Vallejo that carry numerous passengers every week to and from San Francisco for play and work.
These days, the contributions of Mare Island and the great influence of John Frisbie and General Mariano Vallejo are still remembered in the community of Vallejo as the community entered the 2000ís. The new development of the waterfront, the restoration of the Empress Theater, and the development in downtown Vallejo all signify a bright future for the community of Vallejo. The historic and rich past of Vallejo wonít be forgotten, as Vallejo continues to move into the future.
