Tiburon, California is situated on the Tiburon Peninsula, which runs south to the San Francisco Bay, and is a community located in the County of Marin. The smaller community of Belvedere, which was a separate island occupies the west-south portion of the peninsula and adjoins Tiburon. Tiburon is bordered by Mill Valley on the west and Corte Madera on the north. However, the community otherwise primarily surrounded by the Bay. Except for Tiburon and Belvedere, the majority of the peninsula is unincorporated, which includes the communities of Paradise Can and Strawberry, in addition to parts of the northern side. According to the 2010 census, the population of Tiburon was 8,962 people. Tiburon and Belvedere share a post office.
Where the community is located on the peninsula resulted is the name that was first given to the community. Previously, Tiburon was the southern terminus of the North Pacific and the San Francisco Railroad, which eventually came to be known as the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. This railroad transported goods for relocation to barges for transfer to communities all around San Francisco Bay. Currently it is a tourist town and a commuter. It is connected by fast ferry services to San Francisco and with a focus on clothes shops and restaurants. It is the closest location on the mainland to Angel Island, which has a regular ferry service that joins to the island.
Native Indians were the first known human habitation of the local region, These Indians left rock carvings on Ring Mountain. The first post office opened in Tiburon in 1884. The year 1964 brought incorporation to Tiburon.
In Spanish Tiburon means shark. Whether Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala saw the Tiburon Peninsula that was covered with trees that looked like a shark or a number of sharks close to where he anchored, in 1775. On San Carlos we may never know. He named the land Shark Point or Punta del Tiburon. The Coastal Miwok Indian tribes had resided here for thousands of years. However, isn’t a clear concept of what they named the peninsula.
A man from Dublin named John Reed was awarded a provisional grant for the majority of Southern Marin, that included the Tiburon Peninsula, in 1831, from the Mexican authorities, and, in 1834, was officially granted the Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio. In 1836, Mr. Reed married the daughter of the comandante of the San Francisco Presidio, named Hilaria Sanchez. The Reed name is preserved on the local school district, subdivisions, and streets. Many different forms of Hilaria's name, and that of her granddaughter named Hilarita Reed, are found on the Catholic Church, a housing development, and Catholic streets.
Hilarita married a Doctor named Benjamin Lyford, who became the first developer of land with his Lyford's Hygeia, which is currently Old Tiburon. The Hilarita Lyford and Benjamin House, that was previously located on their dairy farm at Strawberry Point, is currently a feature of the Western Sanctuary and headquarters of the Audubon Society located on Greenwood Beach Road.
Since the death of John Reed in 1842, some 40 years ago, life hasn’t changed much, since 1882, after the arrival of Peter Donahue. Mr. Donahue brought with him the North Pacific and San Francisco Railroad, which sometime later became the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. Mr. Donahue and Mr. Reed made a deal for a right-of-way, and blasted the rock at Point Tiburon. Then built a railroad terminal that connected with the ferries of San Francisco Bay. The passenger ferries took automobiles and commuters to Sausalito and San Francisco, while the barges transferred loaded freight cars to Richmond and San Francisco
In 1941, the last railroad operated passenger ferry service departed Tiburon. However, the freight and passenger ran until 1967. During the 1960’s, passenger service ferry was again continued, when in the evening and early morning hours, harbor Carriers used sightseeing boats. The railroad removed some railroad tracks, which plugged tunnels up and destroyed the trestle above Trestle Glen. The railroad ferry pier was also demolished during the 1970’s. The community of Tiburon bought the railroad roadbed, and is currently serving as the waterfront railroad system. Following years of studies and hearings, the previous railroad yards became the Point Tiburon commercial and housing project.
The railroad-ferry service attracted several other industries to Tiburon. Codfish canneries were located next to the bay shore to can fish that was delivered from Alaska. Ship dismantlers dismantled many obsolete ocean-going vessels. The Navy established a vast coaling station on the east shore of the peninsula on the location of one of the old fish canneries, in 1904. Several powder plants were opened and many brick kilns were built. In the shallow waters of the bay, oyster beds were developed. The railroad yards were fully capable of building locomotives as well as freight and passenger cars, as well as to service and repair trains.
