A woman named Mrs. Sarah Winters was going back home in Illinois to visit her parents in 1852. In 1853 she made it back in San Francisco. However, while traveling to Sacramento, her boat crashed into another vessel, which went down in a matter of minutes. The five-year-old boy named George didn't drown, but Mrs. Winters and 2-year-old Helen drowned. Mr. Winters, who at that time was 37 years old, married Margaret Martin, who was 15 years old in 1860.
The Winters family became very wealthy from the interest they held in the Comstock Lode and from their freighting business during the 1850s. Their freight line in Nevada was named The Winters Express. In 1857, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose name was Brigham Young. Mr. Young asked for all of his followers to go back to Salt Lake City.
Mr. Winters saw a chance to purchase some inexpensive property Mormons. He bought a square mile of significant property in the Washoe Valley in Nevada from Jacob Rose for $50 and a team of oxen. He purchased some additional Mormon property in the valley until he had 1280 acres there.
Mr. Winters increased his assets until, some ten years later, he owned over some 18,000 acres in Nevada and California. The property included around some 1300 acres that he purchased from the Wolfskill family on both sides of Putah Creek here and in Sacramento, where what is currently known as Executive Airport. Around 1860, Mr. Winters started getting interested in horse racing. There is a racetrack in Carson Valley. While Mr. Winters was traveling east to make sure that all of the paperwork for some of his properties, he took a break and stopped off in St. Louis to enjoy a good horse racing event. The trip to Saint Louis gave Mr. Winters the ideal opportunity to buy a horse there, which he did. He purchased the most famous racehorse named Norfolk, from a man named Mr. R. Alexander, who owned the Woodburn stud farm, which was in Kentucky. Mr. Winters shipped to Panama and then on to California. No horse could outrun the stallion. Mr. Winters assumes that he introduced thoroughbred horses to anywhere west of the Mississippi. The contests between Lodi and Norfolk and Lodi, which was owned by Judge named Charles Bryan, are legendary. Mr. Winters purchased some 1,300 acres of property from a named Malthis Wolfskill in 1865, which included 700 acres in the county of Yolo, and 600 acres in Solano.
He bought the horse there because the climate of Washoe Valley has proven to be very severe during the winter months. He was continually commuting fromhis ranches in the Carson Valley and his assets in this region, which included the proposed construction of a railroad north from Vacaville that would benefit him by moving his racing horses to the race track as well as shipping agricultural products. Mr. Winters was motivated to offer some property to the railroad, in addition to a considerable amount of money to erect a bridge across Putah Creek.
In 1877, he sold his holdings on the Solano side of the creek to William Baker and built a home on the Yolo County property, about one and one-half miles east of Winters. In 1878, the Winters Advocate reported that Mr. Winters that he would construct grandstand at his race track here that would seat some 1,100 people.
The best days for Mr. Winter's racing stables was between 1865 and 1890. Several famous racing horses were born and raised in his barns here. Those younger horses that didn't show all of the desired qualities were transported to his Nevada ranch where they were trained for teaming or for riding.
Theodore Winters ran for governor of Nevada, in 1890, on the Democratic ticket. In the meantime, he sold all of his lands here. The reason for this sale was because he needed the funds, both move his horses to Nevada and to help him finance his campaign for governor. However, that fall, he was beaten badly in the election.
That political race was the situation that went bad for Mr. Winters' fortunes. He was deep in debt because of the campaign. Mr. Winters had to sell some of his property in Nevada. His 17-year-old daughter, Maggie, had jaundice and passed away in San Francisco in 1897. After her daughter passed away, and Mrs. Winters, who had given birth to some ten children, didn't seem to lose all interest in living. In 1898 she too passed away in San Francisco.
The wills of Mr. and Mrs. Winters were not probated until after the death of Neva Sauer, and in order to begin settling the estate, the ranch was sold to a man named E. Scripps II, who was a well-known newspaper chain magnate.
