In Vineyard, California is located in the county of Sacramento. Raising grapes in California started with the Spanish Franciscan Missionaries. In 1769, these grapes were raised by the first mission in California, which was the Mission San Diego. Much the same as the planting palm trees there would also palm fronds for Palm Sunday. The reason for planting of these vineyards was wine for communion.
In 1829, a man named Ysidro Reyes had planted some 17 acres of Mission Grape vines. Ysidro Reyes was born at the Mission San Gabriel. Mr. Reyes had learned to ferment and cultivate this robust grape. This grape was raised for sacramental by all of the Missions. However, the residents of the Pueblo acquired taste for drinking wine. Putting the grapes in a cowhide that was loosely hung form four plots or trees was for the purpose of fermentation.
A favored drink was the fortified wine was known as Angelica. It isn’t known if Mr. Reyes was the first winemaker for commercial purposes in the Los Angeles area. However, apparently he was able to support his family exclusively from the production of wine. However, Mr. Reyes happened to recently run into a distiller named Jean-Louis Vignes who would become a mentor to Mr. Reyes.
In 1831, after Jean-Louis-Vignes arrived in Los Angeles, he purchased and cultivated some 104 acres of property that was located between the banks of the Los Angeles River and the original Pueblo. He called this land El Aliso in honor of the white alder tree that was located close to the entrance, which was centuries old. Mr. Vignes planted a vineyard and began the preparations for making wine. The early experiments that Mr. Vignes performed while he was awaiting for his own grapevines to mature, were with friend and neighbor, who was Ysidro Reyes. He too was planting vineyards. The two became friends and worked well together in the three years that it took for the vineyards that Mr. Vignes had planted and were beginning to producing grapes.
The Mission grapes produced large quantiles of wine and grew well. However, Mr. Vignes didn’t like the wine that was produced and tried to determine if aging would improve the taste of the wine, which it didn’t. At the time it was considered the usual practice to drink the wine as soon as it was fermented. However, this practice wasn’t used unless the wine was converted to Angelica, which a wine that is similar to a fortified wine named Port. Mr. Vignes determined that it was essential to import better wines such as Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Bordeaux. From around Cape Horn. Potato slices and moss were inserted into the roots of the vine in order to maintain their roots while on their long voyage.
Mr. Vignes came to be known as the first person from California to age his wines and to grow quality vines. By the time Mr. Mr. Vignes planted the vineyard of his recently awarded Rancho Boco de Santa Monica, he had already left Pueblo de Los Angeles in 1839. Mr. Vignes had become a skilled and knowledgeable grower of grapes he become a premier resource for his mature barrels and a considerable load of grafts, he knew that his European Bordeaux grapes that would thrive in the rich Santa Monica Canyon. It is still unknown what the precise date of Mr. Vignes’ first vintage wine that arrived from the vineyards in Europe. However, it might have well been in 1837, since the year in 1857 is when he placed an advertisement asserting that some of his wines were 20 years old.
Because Mr. Vignes owned some property in the San Bernardino Mountains, he was able to obtain the wood for his barrels. Therefore, during the early 1800’s, commercial cultivation of wine in California was primarily located in Southern California. Although Mr. Vignes is considered to be the importer of European vines in California, as a well-documented importer of European grapevines who also planted grape vines on his property in Los Angeles in 1833. However, he rapidly and followed by a man named William Wolfskill, who was another primary early wine maker in California, who in, 1838, bought first vineyard in the Los Angeles region. Mr. Wolfskill had 145 acres of property and had some 55,000 of vines by 1858. Between the 1830’s and the 1840’s. Mr. Wolfskill and Mr. Vignes were the two primary commissures of making wine in California. Others were attracted to their success, which increased the interest Southern California wine cultivation.
Mr. Vignes made the first documented shipment of California wine. The market in Los Angeles market was too small for his production, so he loaded a shipment on the Monsoon, which was to be headed towards Northern California. Mr. Vignes was making regular shipments to San Francisco, Monterey, and Santa Barbera. Mr. Vignes made some 1,000 barrels of wine/year or some 150,000 bottles/year of wine. In addition, Mr. Vignes owned some 40,000 vineyards by 1842.
