Shingle Springs, California was founded, in 1848, at the location 48ers. Gold miners arrived it the area in droves, hoping to make their fortune by trying to strike it rich. The Shingle Springs came from a shingle mill that produced as much as some up to 16,000 shingles every and, the cold springs ran through the settlement.
Shingle Springs became at the eastern terminus of the Sacramento Valley Placerville Railroad. From Sacramento, the settlement was located some 48 miles by railroad, and some 37 miles by wagon.
In 1850, a man named Bartlett was responsible for the first house. The house was erected on a hill, close to the springs, and became the Spring House and became a stopover for visitors. Another open house named the Missouri House opened about 17 feet east of the Shingle Spring House. Another open house was known as the Planters House in 1852.
Two blacksmith shop opened at about the same time. Right behind the Planter's House, was Shingle Creek and a sawmill that was powered by steam. The mill was owned and operated by two men named S. Cutler and A. Catlin. This mill was working for around two years. The lumber from the mills old for $150 the mill/per thousand. The mill opened right after the Sacramento fire in 1852.
Rich placer mines surrounded the area, and the gulches and canyons had numerous miner's cabins. Between 1852 and 1856, miners received their supplies from another settlement known as Buckeye Flat, around a mile east of Shingle Springs, at that time of the town there were two or three stores. However, these stores have also vanished along with the mountain mining settlements. Another town opened in 1857, close to the Planter's House. The house did a reasonable business with the local miners in the area.
All through all this confusion had no effect on Shingle Springs. A waystation was opened for those visitors who were traveling to Nevada, Carson, and Placerville. The same year, the road to Shingle Springs was finally completed. There was an excursion train to this area, which was the terminus of the road. Forwarding business was accomplished on this road to Placerville. The new road helped the mountain settlement, was the best and easiest road across the Sierra range to Nevada. The settlement of Shingle Springs was surveyed mapped and lots laid out.
The owner of the Planter's House was a man named D. Hall. Mr. Hall, was ready to transfer to those who wanted to buy the house. A California settlement became a terminus of a railroad. Homes were built quickly both for residences and for businesses, a telegraph and express and office, a railroad depot, and a Post Office were all established. Freight trains were packed the depot. With the exception of Sunday, two trains ran every day, were run from Sacramento, and the extra freight trains were run to furnish carrying capacity of the freight route.
Stagecoaches left every day, that had numerous with passengers on their was further east. In a short amount of time the settlement became one of activity and business that was the best in California. The amount of business would stay the stay the same for a long time. Eventually, the railroad ran to Placerville. Structures were erected and shops soon followed. However, the railroad didn't reach Placerville. In middle 1866, the Central Pacific Railway System, which ran over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The railway system carried passengers and freight over carrying business and passenger traffic for localities beyond the mountains and changed the route and now ran through Shingle Springs. However, the activity gradually slowed. The transport and the trade was now and traffic that encompassed the area significantly to a stop.
Two men named Edward and Henry Bartlett came back to the area, which was the location of the beautiful spring. The Bartlette brothers created the shingle machine, which is where Shingle Springs got its name. The single machine produced around 16,000 shingles every day. These shingles were worth between $50 and $60/thousand, delivered to Sacramento. Also, lumber sold from between $900 and $1,000/mille.
Sometime later, a man named Mr. Bisby bought the operation from a man named Mr. Scott and then left for the Yuba river mines. He stayed there between 1850 and 1851. That same year, he was elected to the position as Surveyor of Yuba county and later as the surveyor of Washoe County, Nevada. Sometime later, he served in the same capacity in Sonoma county. He also was the chief engineer for lumber, logging in the mountains, as well as the Vallejo and the Marysville
A log cabin was at the same location as the Planter's house. A man named Mr. Hall became the first Postmaster in Shingle Springs in 1855. Buckeye Flat was the primary school of the district.
