Yuba City has been situated in the county of Sutter. During the early 1800s, the region by the native Maidu Indian tribes. In 1841, in search of mission locations, various members of Spanish expeditions and fur trappers attracted by the plentiful wildlife traveled through the region. In most of the territory, the government of Mexico was deeded to a man named John Sutter. John Sutter's Hock Farm was established in 1842 and was a settlement that used agriculture to support the economy in Northern California. This agriculture consisted of vineyards, orchards, cattle, and grain.
The year 1850 brought the incorporation of the county of Sutter by the California State Legislature which, was the original 27 counties in California. It included the southwestern proton of what is currently known as the county of Placer. Also, a part of what is now y known as the County of Colusa. Around 1856, the boundaries were static in their current locations.
This became the first County Seat, proclaimed Senator Green. They offered splendid public squares, imposing structures aimed by Senator Thomas Green to be an honorable community. He persuaded the powers that be in California to proclaim the land he had bought from John Sutter, was the County Seat.
The settlement of Nicolaus was a ferry crossing and trading post that was booming post to make the County Seat to be more critical. After many different changes in the short-term changes in location, the residents of the county of Sutter voted to announce that Yuba City was the enduring Seat of the County. During the early days of California, Yuba City had a rich history the area around Yuba City has numerous historic districts, historic landmarks, and several museums to visit.
In the early 1700s, when the first Mexican and Spanish exploratory expeditions were conducted, the Maidu Native Indian tribe in the area was first settled. During one of these exhibitions, the name Yuba the result of the wild grapes that were growing by a river and the settlement named Uba, which is modified spelling of the Spanish word for grape, which is uva.
A vast expanse of property that included the region where what is currently known as Yuba City, was granted by the government of Mexico. John Sutter received the land. In 1848, gold was discovered on the property that was owned by John Sutter. The men wanted to establish a commercial hub that catered to numerous gold miners who were going upstream to the goldfields. Another settlement at the same time, that was being developed on the eastern bank of the Feather River. In time, this land will become Marysville.
By 1852, Yuba City had a population of around 150 people, about 20 houses, a grocery store, a post office, one hotel, and a steamboat landing. In 1854, Yuba City became the county seat for the county of Sutter. However, the residents of Yuba City determined that a better selection would be Nicolaus, which became the county seat. However, the voters in the county also decided that the best choice selection would be Yuba City. In 1856, some two years later, Yuba City was reinstated as the county seat and had remained the county seat ever since.
Following the end of WW II, there was an increase in the population in Yuba City. The result was the residential areas moving west and south away from the original center of Yuba City. Orchards became residential areas where new housing was made available for people who were migrating to Yuba City.
The climate in Yuba City is Mediterranean and hot and dry in the summertime. In the wintertime, it is wet and more cooling. Usually, January is the dampest and coldest month. July is the driest and hottest. During the wet season between the middle of October and the middle of April, Yuba City is usually under a tule fog and has frequent rain. Although, cold waves from the north might bring some light ice and snow, although this is rare in the valley, but frigid.
Spring starts out being wet but becomes less cool with not as humid when the summer months begin. Usually, rain comes in the form of thunderstorms, but in May there is some rain, but not winter storms. Between June and September, it rains on summer nights. Also, on supper nights, wet weather from the Bay area and cooler temperatures of the wind which comes from the Bay Area. The result is humidity and helps to cool temperatures. Sometimes the coastal fog will go inland to the Sacramento Valley. Autumn begins with warm temperatures but soon becomes foggier, wetter, and more refreshing.
Yuba City is home to the largest dried fruit processing plant in the world, Sansweet Growers Incorporated. In 1988 Yuba City was home to the California Prune Festival. In 2001 the name was changed to the California Dried Plum Festival, and during early 2003, directors announced the end of the festival. This was mostly the result of the difficulty in finding sponsors an increase in costs, and competition from other festivals.
