In the Northern Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area lies the city of Novato, CA or “Novatus” in Spanish, in between Point Reyes National Seashore (west) and San Pablo Bay (east). Novato, CA has a land area of 27.4 square miles with a population of 55,144 in 2020. Over the years, the city’s population increased by 6.24% from the 2010 record of 51,904. However, the current growth rate is declining at -0.22% annually. The population density is 2,009 people per square mile. The city is the 166th largest in California.
A warm-summer Meditteranean climate is expected in Novato based on the Köppen Climate Classification. A record-high of 109 °F on September 2, 2017, was noted, contrary to the maximum temperature record of 79.9 °F. The coldest temperature record was at 16 °F in December 2013.
Like most San Francisco Bay Area cities, Novato also holds a rich culture and wondrous history mysteries, including the city’s name. Many theories surround the name, yet history was well-documented by the Novato Historical Guild and the private citizens that grew up in the area. One of these is the adaptation from St. Novatus. The name change took place after the baptism of the chief of Coast Miwok.
Primarily, the city was home to numerous Coast Miwok Villages such as the Chokecherry, Puyuku, and Olompali. Another name theory is that Novato was named after an infamous outlaw. A Spanish Officer named Ygnacio Martinez, who captured an Indian Outlaw Canada de Novato, is said to be the origin of the name. Nevertheless, the military officer and landowner, Fernando Feliz, was granted a sizeable swath of land, which he then called Rancho de Novato in 1839.
Novato history continues with Joseph Sweetser and Francis DeLong, who purchased Rancho De Novato several years after. With thousands of acres, the new owners planted a multitude of fruit trees, specifically apples, which eventually became the largest apple orchard in the United States. Along Novato Boulevard, trees like cypress and pine were also planted.
The first school in Novato was located at the Grant Avenue corner, was built in 1859, as well as the first church where the DeLong & Redwood and the Shell Station is located.
Additionally, in 1889, the first major land development led by the Novato Home and Farm Company, selling small 5 to 10 acres lots. This began the flourishing of businesses in Novato at the time. Saloons, House Hotels, Livery were built at the eastern end of Grant. After a decade, Capt. Hiribarren and his wife purchased the establishments due to their water transport business stoppage because of the railroad’s coming in 1879. This connects Novato to Sonoma County and San Rafael. The area around the train depot was eventually called “New Town”, commonly known as “Old Town Novato” nowadays. With the Great Depression in 1930, many farmers lost their land.
However, after World War II, Novato was able to bounce back quickly with the tract homes construction and a freeway. Being an unincorporated area, much growth was uncontrolled, let alone unplanned. It was only in the 60s that Novato was finally included as a city.
Presently, Novato maintains a vibrant community and a charming old town. Being immersed in nature, wildlife parks, and its tourist spots will astound you. Not to mention the vast litany of galleries and museums for a small area.
One of the must-sees in Novato is the Space Station Museum which features a varied array of equipment such as space suits, control panels, and replica lunar landers. This museum is a perfect fit for those space-nuts enthusiasts. The Space Station Museum even organises stargazing events and hosts space festivals. Another museum in Novato will astound you with its historical richness. The Museum of the American-Indian. Having been the first settlers in the area, the Miwok had fascinating cultures like painting their entire bodies with chalk and charcoal in black and white stripes. The museum keeps the ethnic group’s legacy alive.
Moreover, if you’re a big nature lover, you will adore hiking and bird watching activities in Rush Creek. With over 500 acres of wetland, little white snowberries and purple shooting star flowers grace the waters. Peregrine falcons sometimes visit the area, but wading birds are abundant.
So much history and culture to be immersed in; Novato, CA is indeed packed with things to see and enjoy both for the locals and tourists.
