The community of Shingle Springs, California, established at the location of a mining camp by the 48ers, miners. The latter had arrived in California in 1848 to make their fortune by striking it rich during the days in California the gold rush days. The name of Shingle Springs came from a shingle mill that produced as many as some 16,000 shingles a day.
Much the same as other settlements in the county of El Dorado on the western slope, the town of Shingle Springs is probably best remembered as a railroad town located next to the oldest railroad system in the west. The settlement got its start during the California Gold Rush days in 1848, as a gold mining camp. In the gulches that surround this great community once sat numerous miners and their cabins, and gold was the only a single the day away.
A company of California 48ers established the settlement of Shingle Springs, was founded by a company of 48ers. It was only a rough miner’s camp. In 1850, two men named Henry and Edward Bartlett owned and operated the first open house. The settlement was name from the Bartlett brothers ran a shingle machine that was pulled by horses. The brothers produced as many as some 16,000 shingles each day. The brothers elected to call their open house the Shingle Springs House since the device was located close to the springs located on the western border of the camp.
Silver Springs grew slowly by usual ln Gold Rush standards. In 1851, another roadhouse opened. It was named the Missouri House. It was a rather large log cabin that was just east of Bartlett’s place. In 1852 the Planter’s House was next that was constructed by a man whose name was R. Wakefield, also operated the open house. Two blacksmith shops opened by this time. The in business was the county of El Dorado’s early steam-powered sawmill that was owned and operated by a man named S. Cutler of Sly Park and A. Catlin of Sacramento. The Cutler and Catlin Mill provided the majority of the lumber used that rebuilt Sacramento following after the destructive fire of 1852. The arrangement was very beneficial for Cutler, and Catlin & Cuter could then charge a higher cost for their lumber.
In 1853 the first post office opened in the Shingle Springs House. Sometime later, it became a store. Rich placer mines that surrounded the mining camps during the enthusiasm during the days of the Gold Rush. The business in Shingle Springs worsened, from the local miner’s camp. So the settlement was only a quiet village. Buckeye Flat, located a mile east of Shingle Springs, is where the miners went for supplies.
A miner could obtain some local society at the gaming tables, the pleasures of a fine woman at a reasonable price, some weak liquor, and supplies at the Buckeye Flat. While Buckeye Flat grew into a town, and established a school district with several businesses, once the mines played out, it became a ghost town like so many other settlements.
The Comstock enthusiasm was still a roadside waystation to escape the boomtown the small settlement and roadside waystation escaping the boomtown excitement. During the gold rush days, several of its neighboring towns. However, in 1865, the Sacramento Valley and Placerville Railroad arrived in the small settlement.
The county of El Dorado and Sacramento were linked for the first time. The settlement at Silver Springs experienced that almost overnight, Silver Springs became a thriving settlement, that had become a hub for transportation and freighting in the mountains. The depot experienced the arrival of two passenger trains a freight train and an express train. Stagecoaches ran every day to all stations east, Placerville from Shingle Springs. It was through Silver Springs that all shipping to the Comstock mines had to pass. Then the freight was transferred by oxen pulling wagons over the Sierras. Shingle Springs was the busiest hub for traffic and, that equaled that of California. However, during the summertime of 1865, the Central Pacific Railway system expanded its route to include the county of El Dorado and ran through Auburn.
By 1883, there was only one resident still living in Silver Springs. With the arrival of the Central Pacific R.R., Shingle Springs wouldn’t go along with the plan. The surrounding towns such as Frenchtown and Buckeye Flat, there were huge trading hubs during the gold rush in the county of El Dorado The era of the gold rush days disappeared during gold rush era when in the county simply disappeared much the same as Shingle Springs did when the mines played out.
Shingle Springs is a delightful place to live, work, play, visit, and raise a family. The community has a motivating and rich history and can look forward to a vibrant and bright future.
