Most white settlers had never heard of the City of and, only a few people know its location, and it was established close to the junction of the Consumes and Mokelumne Rivers. The new settlement was the second largest settlement in the county. The settlement had serious communications with San Francisco all the year-round. This benefit was not to be had by any other settlement except for Stockton. In 1850 white pioneers started relocating there. In middle of 1850, the settlement was surveyed, and several lots sold to individuals for a business and houses.
Some five schooners arrived loaded with lumber, hardware, and groceries in one week. Schooners were arriving continually with products in early 1860. The size of the settlement is increasing, and several wooden and brick structures were built. The settlement included some 23 homes and a hotel in 1861. A man named George Keith did all of the expense of the building at some $5,000. These lots were cost anywhere from between $600 and $1,000 $1,000 each. The settlement was ten years old, and the residents relocated to Lodi, California.
Three men named Mr. Megley, Mr. Wardrobe, and Mr. Ley petitioned the railroad company to establish a station in Lodi. The men offered them half a square mile of property to establish a settlement. This liberal offer was accepted, and the land was surveyed. The name of the settlement was first named Mokelumne station. However, a few years later this name was determined be too much like to other settlement and the current name of Lodi was selected.
The population of the new settlement was about some 1,200 residents. It was situated on somewhat high ground, less than a mile south of the Mokelumne river, and 14 miles north of Stockton. The depot grounds for the railroad were located through the south, north the middle. The homes in the region were located of about a mile, while the plat for the settlement remains the same. This was first structure that was built in the settlement. The next structure was the hotel that came to be known as the Hooker House. However, the name was changed to Mokelumne station. It late 1861 it was first built in the county of Amador in Sancho Plano. A man named Charles Hopkins relocated to the county of Cakaveras in Campo Seco. It was first called General Hooker, and sometime later, he came to be known as the hero of Lookout Mountain.
A man named Dan Cris purchased a hotel in 1869, from a named Mr. Hopkins. The hotel had a beautiful view of Dover on the San Joaquin. The here relocated the hotel to Woodbridge. He intended to transfer the hotel by water, however the river water too low. Therefore, the settlement of Mokelumne was surveyed, and the destination of the hotel was changed to the new location. It became known as the Hooker House. Mr. Chris had an addition to the hotel built by a man named J. Spencer in 1870.
In 1869, the Railway company started building depot structures. Two men named W. Jacobs and J.Allison. These two men created Stateline Mokelumne and this location. Then connections were made with the lines to Tuolumne and the upper portion of counties of Amador and Calaveras. Mr. Cris was made the postmaster and kept the post office at the Hooker House. Therefore, in 1869 was focused on the stagecoach line, the post office, a depot, and the hotel. The future might convince the powers that be to establish a settlement. J. Allison established a drug store, a butcher shop, and livery stable in early 1870.
In 1870, general funds were collected for the purpose of establishing a church. The structure came to be known as the Union Church. Once the structure was surrounded and enclosed, three services were held therein on the one each on Sunday. However, sometime later, the church accidentally burned to the ground. Additional funds were raised, and another, much larger church was built on the same foundation, The new church was dedicated and provided to the Methodists. This was the only church in the area.
That same year, two men named John Flannagan and J. Spencer established Spencer House. In the following winter, it was completed Two men named J.Barry, and Edward Olwell bought the hotel. Then a man named J. Spencer bought the hotel a year later. The Lodi Warehouse and Mill Company, which was comprised primarily of farmers. The cost was some $30,000.
Mr. Bingham was the first manager, and Mr. Gove became the first secretary of the company, and Mr. Bingham became the first manager of the company. Later that same year, the hotel was acquired by a man named George Locke, who was the mortgagee. Until early 1882, Mr. Locke operated the hotel until early 1882. Then, Lasel, Wright, and Corson operated the mill for some 18 months. Then Mr. Carson bought the hotel in 1883. Then, in 1884, the hotel was bought by Wright, Lasell, and Corson, who continued the partnership for around two years.
