James Hardie Siding in Orangevale, CA 95662
James Hardie ColorPlus lap siding in Gray Slate now wraps this Orangevale home, giving it a clean, modern face that the worn original cladding could no longer deliver. We stripped the house down to the framing, pulling off all of the old siding and trim around every window, door, and corner, then hauled the debris away. With the walls open, our crew inspected the structural members for dry rot and made repairs where decay was found before any new material went up.
To get the home ready for the new siding system, we sheathed the exterior in 7/16-inch exterior-grade OSB for shear-wall strength and passed the city's nailing inspection. Over that we installed HardieWrap weather barrier, Forti-Flash rubberized flashing at the window and door openings, and metal Z-flashing for long-term moisture protection. The Gray Slate lap siding from the Statement Collection was finished with 5/4x4 HardieTrim boards in Arctic White around the openings and corners, in a rustic style, for a crisp contrast against the gray field. We painted the eaves, fascia, garage door, foundation, and all sides of the chimney to tie the exterior together.
Beyond the siding, we handled a few practical changes to the layout and exterior. The back closet patio door was abandoned and sided through - we demoed the door in place, framed and sheathed the opening, and waterproofed it to seal that wall. We also restored an electrical outlet at the front of the house once the walls were exposed, and installed a new front door for the homeowner.

We procrastinated on redoing our siding for a long time because we knew it would not be cheap or easy. Now that we've done it, I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. While I was right about it not being cheap, it was very easy. GVD took care of everything! They explained things and made the sales process very easy. Choosing the right paint color from the many options was probably the hardest part. They were slightly more expensive than the other bids, but not by much. We ended up choosing them because they were SO thorough. Their contract and paperwork explained all the things that were covered and all the things they would check for including an allotment for a given square foot of dry rot repairs. Based on all that and their excellent reviews, we went with them. I am happy to report that there were no surprise expenses. The crew that came out was so nice and respectful. They work FAST! Every time I peeked out the window an entire section was done. I also really appreciate the care they took in doing the caulking and painting, as well as hiding as many wires as possible. They really care that the final product looks as great as it can look. Our house is very old and getting the new siding makes the entire house feel like a brand-new house. I couldn't be happier with it. The only bad thing that happened is I did lose an entire shelf of glasses. They bang on all the walls to ensure there is no dry rot and as our ancient house shifted, that shelf fell, and those glasses broke. No fault of GVD's, but something to be aware of - secure your things that are on the external walls. I also must add that every single person I spoke with at GVD was super nice and professional. I couldn't recommend them more.
