James Hardie Lap and Batten Board Siding and Anlin Windows in Berkeley, CA 94708

Two stories of the south and west elevations now read clean and crisp, with horizontal lap siding grounding the lower level and a vertical batten-board pattern stepping up the top story. The Timber Bark color carries across both walls and wraps the south balcony porch, giving this Berkeley home a layered, architectural look that holds up well in the hills' shifting weather. New Anlin windows finish the picture, cutting down drafts and tightening up the lines around every opening.

Our crew started by stripping the old siding and trim down to the framing on the south and west facets, then inspected the structural members behind it. Where we found dry rot we cut it out and rebuilt, and the eave braces were checked and addressed before anything new went up. We re-sheathed the walls in half-inch plywood and passed the city's shear-wall nailing inspection, then layered on HardieWrap weather barrier, Forti-Flash rubberized flashing at the windows and doors, and metal Z-flashing to keep moisture out for the long haul.

With the wall assembly squared away, we installed James Hardie ColorPlus siding from the Statement Collection in Timber Bark - lap on the bottom story, batten board up top - and trimmed the openings and corners in 5/4-by-4 Hardie ColorPlus trim. Eaves, fascia, the garage door, and foundation were painted at the new siding locations, and we reset the downspouts and house numbers once the walls were buttoned up.
